Roustika, our village

 

At a distance of 21 kilometers southwest of Rethymno, between the northern and southern Cretan Sea and at an altitude of 290 meters, is built a beautiful village Kefalochori drowned in the green. Roustika!

Village with rare natural beauty, with traditional architecture, with peaceful and kind inhabitants.

Many Rusticians emerged in the sciences but also during wars and uprisings, as capable and brave warriors.

Although the village predates the Venetian occupation, it owes its name to the Venetians as it comes from the Latin word rusticus, which means peasant. Besides, Roustika and the surrounding villages were included in the manor of the Barotsi family.

It has been declared a traditional settlement and has received awards for its cleanliness, its traditional architecture and its cultural activity.

Sights

 

  • Monastery of Profitis Ilias 16th century, fortress architecture with a three-aisled basilica with a dome. The bell tower, along with that of Arkadi, are the only surviving Venetian buildings in Crete.

 

  • Panagia Livadiotissa (Double aisle of the 14th century with frescoes). Generally the village has more than 20 churches and chapels, many cavernous.

 

  • Seragio Impressive building, visitable only from the outside.

 

  • Ecclesiastical Museum Next to the church of the village which dates from the 14th century. In this museum are exhibited icons from the old iconostasis of the church of Agios Charalambos and Michael Archangelos, gold-embroidered epitaph, priestly utensils and vestments, liturgical books. Interesting murals in the church of the Assumption of the Virgin.

 

  • Museum of Greek traditional costumes Unique in all of Crete for the wealth of costumes from all over Greece.

 

  • Olive mill

 

  • Cultural and Cultural Center and Library of Rustics “Anestis and Manolis Anagnostakis” It is housed in the house of the Anagnostakis family and was donated to the village by the famous poet Manolis Anagnostakis. Collections from his life and work are exhibited, while every August there are events that are a top cultural event, dedicated to his memory.
